Ask Erasure - "Andy Bell (Nov 2003)"
This Ask Erasure feature publishes the responses that Andy and Vince have given to questions that people have sent in. Feel free to submit questions via the Contact section.

01) How do you achieve such a huge vocal range? Is it natural or were you coached? (Chris Wright)

Andy: My voice was quite high when I was a nipper I remember hearing my speaking voice in Junior school for the first time after we'd done a recording in English class everyone thought I was a girl so I s'pose I had the high range before my voice broke. I'm quite surprised at how low it goes now.

Been in a few school choirs which trains the ear, I think I have a sonographic memory for tunes. Would quite like to try opera. So mostly natural I would say.

02) I would like to know, out of all the outfits you have worn on stage throughout the years, which one is your favourite and do you decide the costumes yourself or does someone pick them for you? (Dawn Edmondson)

Andy: One of my two best friends Dean Bright has always helped us with buying stuff for TV shows etc. and always managed to get together all of the outlandish stage outfits. His finger is always on the pulse fashion wise & he knows how to go against the grain and has a perverse camp sense of humour as all gay men view the world a bit twisted.

I usually tell him what look I want to have, I don't care if it looks naff and then it all comes together slowly after 3 or 4 fittings. A tour budget is always set before we embark on one. Dean went to St. Martins School of Art and Fashion and; has a fabulous cut with clothes. He also has a great team of people who he works with including, David Cabaret, Tim, Pearl 7 Donald. He can sum something up in about 3 words and always makes me laugh.

My favourite so far has been the blue cowboy outfit now on loan to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and a pair on Calvin Klein undies with a white corset and vest with a pair of patent red Vivienne Westwood 6" high heels.

03) Erasure is a band with a long musical history and with fans around the world who follows your music by years. What does that mean for you, what do you think about the people that follows Erasure through the years and what do you think is the reason why fans keep listening your music? (Dominique Aros Orellana)

Andy: I love the fact that our music is heard in many corners of the world this is one thing that makes me very happy the more obscure the place the better.

I love my voice and I love Vince's music it is a very magical combination. It is very satisfying to write and perform your own songs I never quite imagined as a child that this would be my job, it certainly doesn't feel like work, only endless phone interviews and dancing on stage I never realised how fit you have to be.

I am very grateful to all our fans everywhere, without whom the music would be quite pointless. I try to keep fresh & not become cynical with people.

As long as Vince and I enjoy making the music I'm sure it will bring pleasure to someone, somewhere. Many thanks.

04) What are your best and worst moments from the tour? (Donna Tandy)

Andy: Best and worst can be summed up by having a really groggy day, i.e. a long rainy drive with a cold, then get to a shitty damp venue then have a fantastic gig with a really up, noisy crowd which makes the whole thing worthwhile.

05) As you and k.d.lang are two of my favourite singers, what was it like to do a duet with her and why was it never released as a single? (Julie Wright)

Andy: It was a great insight to see how a singer who I really admire works in the studio, quite a lot of phlegm was involved but it was a great thrill.

I think it was a fab recording and Warners did talk about releasing it as a benefit single for Stonewall in the US but as it happens it was sneaked on as an extra track on the k.d.lang single 'Lifted'

06) What criteria do you look for in your backing singers? Should they compliment your voice or offer something different? (Kevin Dodwell)

Andy: Just depends on what the vibe is for a particular song or album, studio-wise. For touring it's just a matter of what's the most convenient and painless way of finding and rehearsing singers. We seem to make the right decision mostly and they have all been very good and well disciplined (more than me).

07) If erasure are planning to tour again soon, if so please bring back the lycra (a man can dream!!!) (Lee Askey)

Andy: I would love to bring back the lycra I'm ready for some hot, horny, sexiness again and I think I can still get away with it. The tighter and more revealing the better, you may have a chance to see us sooner than you think aha!

08) Out of all the gigs you have ever played, is there one particular gig which stands out as most memorable and if so why? (Louise Child)

Andy: Every single gig is different, smaller ones are better for me.

09) Have you ever been tempted to release an independent, low-budget, totally non commercial album? (Riley Rempel)

Andy: There are always little side projects on the go particularly with Vincent, keep your eyes and ears peeled.

10) What are you usually doing / going through your mind 5 minutes before you're due to go on stage? (Ros Thomas)

Andy: You kind of start hyper-ventilating and become deliriously stupid laughing at anything, so does the whole crew, then you just take a deep breath and walk on stage. It's very exhilarating.

11) Considering that Erasure have had a lot of influence on the underground synthpop scene (take Cosmicity, Anything Box, Freezepop, etc. for example) would you ever consider working with any synthpop bands/artists (producing, collaborations, etc.) in the future? (Scott Sunday)

Andy: Surrree.

12) Andy, if you had not getting together with Vince, what do you think you would be doing now? (Sue Cartwright)

Andy: I would probably still be in a band and hopefully would have been discovered somewhere even if I had to keep a regular job I believe I would still be in a touring band.

13) If you could choose one band or artist to cover one of your songs, who would it be and which song? (Amy Shepherd)

Andy: I would have loved Elvis Presley to do a version of 'Blue Savannah'.

14) You're spending a lot of time in Spain because you have a beautiful house there. Is that one big holiday for you or are you also working there? (Maria Plop)

Andy: It's just a very quiet relaxing pace of life there when it gets too boring we come back to London, it's fab in the winter time when it's raining. Thank you for all the cards by the way, sorry we didn't see you last time.

15) Fill in the blanks: ____ is good, but ____ is better. (Evelyn Lucas)

Andy: More is good, but Less is better.
